Pittsburgh, PA – The August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) was honored to host the Pittsburgh premiere of January 14th, a poignant new short film written and directed by La'Chris Jordan, on Saturday, October 28, 2023, as part of the Black Bottom Film Festival (BBFF). This year’s festival, presented by Citizens, spotlights the profound themes that shape African American cinema. January 14th was screened in the “All About Love - bell hooks” block at the Main Theater.
The film stars Jasmine Runnels, Tyree Jamar, Tabitha Mitchell, and Brian Badolato, each delivering powerful performances that explore the themes of love, resilience, and self-discovery. Brian Isom Underwood’s cinematography captures the heart and intensity of the film, adding depth to the narrative with his skillful visual storytelling.
This year, the BBFF not only celebrated African American cinema but also fostered meaningful dialogue on Black art’s role in challenging, inspiring, and shaping American culture. The festival featured special guests such as Dr. Jacqueline Stewart, President of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the first African American host of Turner Classic Movies, and Maya S. Cade, creator of Black Film Archive and scholar-in-residence at the Library of Congress. The festival’s unique collaboration with Howard University brings additional programming and educational offerings, highlighting the commitment to supporting and advancing Black cinematic voices.
